Can My Dog Get Sick After Doggy Daycare? 🐾

One of the most common questions we hear at The Bark Club is, “Can my dog get sick from daycare?” It’s a totally valid concern—we know how much you love your furry family member! The truth is, if your pup is up to date on vaccines and you’ve chosen a trustworthy facility (like us 😉), the risk of serious illness is very low.

Still, just like kids at school, dogs can sometimes pick up a bug when hanging out in a social setting. Here’s a quick rundown of what pet parents should know:

Contagious Illnesses

  • Kennel Cough: Think of it as the doggy version of a cold. It spreads easily and usually sounds like a dry, honking cough.

  • Dog Flu (Canine Influenza): Similar to kennel cough, but can also make pups extra tired with some eye discharge.

  • Parvovirus: A serious virus that spreads through contaminated poop or surfaces. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.

  • Distemper: A highly contagious virus—thankfully, vaccines do a great job protecting against it.

  • Leptospirosis: A bacterial infection that can spread in shared spaces, often through water.

Parasites

  • Intestinal Parasites: Things like Giardia, Coccidia, and worms can spread through poop or shared water bowls.

  • Fleas & Ticks: These pesky hitchhikers can be picked up from the environment or other pups.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

  • Papilloma Virus: This one can cause little warts around your pup’s mouth—usually harmless but worth keeping an eye on.

  • Stress: A new environment or extra excitement can sometimes upset a dog’s tummy, leading to soft stools, vomiting, or just a bit of “ruff” behavior.

How to Keep Your Pup Safe 🐶💙

We do everything we can at The Bark Club to keep tails wagging and pups safe, but here’s how you can help too:

  • Stay on top of vaccines like Bordetella and canine influenza.

  • Ask your vet for regular stool checks to screen for parasites.

  • Keep your dog on year-round flea & tick prevention.

  • Watch for signs like coughing, vomiting, or unusual tiredness—if you notice them, keep your pup home and call your vet.

  • Give us a heads-up if your dog gets sick after visiting so we can keep our pack healthy.

Our Promise 🐾

Daycare is all about play, socialization, and burning off that zoomie energy! While there’s always a small chance of illness in social settings, the benefits—happy dogs, tired pups, and lots of wagging tails—are worth it. At The Bark Club, we’re committed to providing a clean, safe, and fun environment where your best friend can thrive.

Because when your pup is part of The Bark Club family, their health and happiness come first. 💙🐕
