Boarding is exciting and sometimes stressful for dogs. It’s common for pets to experience mild, temporary changes when they return home. Here’s what to watch for and when to call your vet.
✅ Common, Temporary Symptoms
Diarrhea
Loose stool in first 24–48 hrs is common (from stress or excitement)
May see small amounts of mucus or blood
Should resolve quickly
Lethargy
Extra sleep is normal after an active boarding stay
Dogs often need rest after play, walks, and stimulation
Increased Eating/Drinking
Some dogs eat or drink less while boarding
“Catching up” once home is normal and should balance in a few days
Coughing (Kennel Cough)
Dry, honking cough (may sound like something stuck in throat)
Mild runny nose or sneezing
Usually clears in 2–3 weeks
Vaccination helps but doesn’t prevent all cases
🚨 Call Your Vet If…
Diarrhea lasts more than 48 hrs
Persistent vomiting or refusal to eat/drink
Cough worsens, affects breathing, or lasts beyond 3 weeks
Extreme lethargy or unusual behavior
